Auction Extended until Jan 10th

Posted under Search Engine Optimization

A lot of people are worried about the Holiday tomorrow and there not being enough time to put in a bid prior to Thursday the 3rd so we have extended the deadline to January 10th at 11am PST. This will allow enough time for everyone to download the list and analyze it prior to the gavel closing. With over 170+ domains there is a domain that fits everyones budget.
My favorite domain is still HealthyHeart.com for $225,000. The best value is Grampa.com for only $2,500; I have a feeling the market will set the right price on this one and it will not be anywhere near the reserve price.
To place your bid, just go to the bid page. If you are not already a paying member of DomainTools, you will be prompted to enter your credit card to verify your identity. After that you are free to bid and then to [...]

Update: Most Deadlines Met On Time

Posted under Search Engine Optimization

Just a quick update on this post from three weeks ago.
1. Although we were ready on time, Flowchart.com v2 was not released. We plan to release it in a week or two. This is because Jeff’s decision to delay this release in order to focus on Assista’s immediate improvements and feedback.
2. FuneralNews.com was not released on time due to hardware provider sending the wrong configuration. Plan to release within seven days.
3. Memorial platform as well did not release on time, for the same reason as above.
4. Recall Media Group’s Domain venture announcement. This one was met on time as we announced Bido. What we have yet to announce is the acquisition of a great company in the domain space. We plan to announce this within a couple of weeks.
5. Release of Assista, met on time. Feedback so far has been extremely positive.
6. Six figure domain purchase, met on time. This [...]

2008 is the Year of the Frog

Posted under Culture

Ok, so why is a blog that usually focuses upon internet marketing and search related patents publishing a post about saving amphibians?

The short answer is that I was asked very nicely, by Jeff Davis of Frog Matters and Amphibian Ark.
The longer answer is addressed by some other folks who are also posting about the Year of the Frog:
Darren Naish, vertebrate palaeontologist, and blogger at Tetrapod Zoology - Get Ready for 2008: Year of the Frog
2008 is, you see, the YEAR OF THE FROG: it’s nothing to do with the Chinese calendar, rather, it’s a concerted global effort to raise awareness of, and do something about, the Global Amphibian Crisis (GAC). What is the GAC, and what can we do about it?

Prolific Blogger Dear Kitty - The New Year will be the Year of the Frog

2007 Year In Review

Posted under Ramblings, The Net

My Future’s So Bright, I Got To Wear Shades
What an amazing year 2007 has been. A year ago, I set a goal to make this blog into something big by breaking into the Technorati Top 100. At the time I made that goal, the blog was ranked 1,379. The blog will end 2007 with a Technorati rank of 45.
By any measures, the growth of John Chow dot Com has exceeded my wildest expectations. In 2007, the blog’s RSS readership went from just over a thousand to over 14,000 and blog’s income went from $3,440.66 in January to $27,240.83 last month. Here are some of the highlights of 2007.
TTZ Media Opens To Everyone

2007 was the year I open TTZ Media to the general Internet. Before then, the site was a private network of technology based sites. This was definitely my biggest project of the year. The webmaster and blogging community [...] Read the rest of this entry »

What did we accomplish in 2007?

Posted under Search Engine Optimization

As I have stated before, 2007 was a challenge. But when you meet the challenges you come out stronger than ever. For some that is an unusual year. For me, it is business as usual. The more they throw at me the better I am going to be. T.R.A.F.F.I.C. marched into New York City in the fall and Steve Forbes shared an evening with us in Florida. Terry Jones got our attention in New York and John Reese gave us some great tips in Las Vegas. I am still trying to get my head around the importance of having Steve Forbes come to TRAFFIC. I have listened to the CD several times but it is packed with so much info and detail and history, that iit is taking me a lot of time to figure it all out. That night will pay dividends to the domain industry for years [...]

My Two Most Valuable Blogging Lessons of 2007

Posted under The Net

This post was guest blogged by Jimson Lee of Speed Endurance, a blog about running and being the best that you can be.
I went live with Speed Endurance on May 21, 2007. The Blog was originally inspired by Steve Pavlina’s Blog as a way to write the book I never wrote.
From there, I came across John Chow’s site from his targeted ad “I love Steve Pavlina… Your blog that is. Keep up the good work” campaign. Little did I realize that John lives in the same city as me!
After 7 months of blogging, here are the 2 most valuable lessons for 2007… the year of my blog:
1) You Can’t Predict the Future from Traffic Sources
I didn’t expect the power of a global audience. Where I thought I’d get the most traffic, I didn’t. Where I didn’t expect to get the most traffic, [...]

Buy Seth now

Posted under Search Engine Optimization

This is absolutely hilarious, but it’s true: You can buy a Seth Godin action figure now! The marketing guru figure produced by Archie McPhee costs under $9 and, according to Seth, all proceeds go to the Acumen Fund. I bet you won’t get a marketing guru (complete with marketing secrets) for less than that ever again.
Stupid, yes. But this marketing gag is just as brilliant, and who knows, maybe they can really raise some money for the Acumen Fund.
Too bad that it didn’t come out before Christmas…

Keep Track of Google’s Crawl Cycle for 20 Bucks

Posted under The Net

As I’m sure you’re already aware, there is no shortage of online services that help you keep track of your site’s metrics. Many people rely on things like Analytics, Sitemeter, Technorati, Alexa and so forth to see how their blogs and sites are doing. Most of these services are designed to track the number of visitors, traffic sources, and things like that.
Some guy named Peter (he never gave a last name) put in this review request for SEOmeter, a new metrics tool that doesn’t track visitors or page views. Instead, SEOmeter.com keeps an eye on Google’s crawl cycle. Why should you care? Read on and find out.
What is Crawl Rate and Crawl Cycle?
Like I said, there are many numbers for webmasters to track when they want to see if their sites are on the rise or about to enter the deadpool. If you see that your blog is attracting more [...]

Search Engine Identification and Filtering of Malicious Web Sites

Posted under Search Engines and Directories

Unfortunately, there are web pages that can be harmful to visit. Google researchers discussed the identification of malicious code on web pages earlier this year in The Ghost In The Browser: Analysis of Web-based Malware (pdf).
The paper’s authors tell us that the focus of delivery of harmful code to computer users has shifted from software that someone installs, to software that is delivered directly to a browser via the Web.
Microsoft has also detailed some of the research that they’ve conducted on web-based malware in Strider HoneyMonkeys: Active, Client-Side Honeypots for Finding Malicious Websites
Search Engines and Malware
When a search engine delivers you to search results filled with a list of links to web pages, should it warn you about any potentially harmful or malicious code on those pages before you visit one of them?
If a search engine does scan pages for embedded code, what implications might that scanning [...]

7 Year Itch

Posted under Search Engine Optimization

On August 19th 2000, I launched David-Carter.com. Back then I didn’t know what I would do with the domain, or whether I could ever make a living online.
This site has been the backbone of my domaining work, though I don’t pay it that much attention and don’t put much effort into it.
I think that the fact it’s been around so long is the key to it’s high ranking in Google and other search engines, but it’s not what it used to be - in the early days of it’s launch, I could get this site top ten ranked for just about any search term I wanted.
I was just looking back at an archived page (you can too - www.archive.org) and though embarrassingly amateurish, there is no doubt that this site laid much of the foundation for what I learned and put into practice along the way.
On the old front page, [...]

Tony Roma’s Ribs, Seafood & Steaks. But Mostly Ribs

Posted under Fine Dining

If you’re feeling in the mood for some good old BBQ ribs and Memphis Blue BBQ is too far away, then Tony Roma’s is a good second choice. Considered the pioneer of Baby Back Ribs, Tony Roma’s can now be found all over the world. With nearly 200 restaurants in 32 countries, the restaurant that Tony started has become a worldwide success story. They have won countless awards over the years for their ribs and signature sauces.
Tony Roma’s reminds me a lot of the Red Lobster. The two restaurants are very similar in style and decor. These aren’t high end restaurant by any means. However, they are a nice enough place to take a date or a family for night out on the town.
The Onion Loaf

There’s really no better way to start a rib feast than with a massive loaf of deep fried onions. It reminded me a lot [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Acres of Love Charity - $400 raised so far!

I’ve just hit my desk again after the Christmas rush of friends, family and lots of fun! Just prior to Christmas I petitioned domainers to consider donating to a charity called Acres of Love (http://www.acresoflove.org/) which provides high quality care for abanoned HIV/AIDS infants and children. As anticipated…

WordPress 2.3.2 Available for Download

Posted under Wordpress

WordPress has just released an urgent security update for the 2.3 series. If you’re blog is powered by WordPress 2.3, then you should upgrade to this latest version right away. The upgrade fixes a security bug that allows people to view your timestamped posts. You may have seen a few posts around Blogsphere showing how to see what Shoemoney is going to post tomorrow. Well, once Shoe upgrades his WordPress, you won’t be able to do that anymore.
WordPress 2.3.2 also suppresses some error messages that can give away information about your database table structure and limits and stops some information leaks in the XML-RPC and APP implementations. There’s also a bonus that allows you to define a custom DB error page. See the full list of changes here.
This is not a major release and as such it will not change your DB structure. Upgrading should be as easy as uploading [...]

The Winner of The Google Christmas Gift

Posted under Ramblings, The Net

Congrats goes out the Tyson Williams for winning the Christmas gift from Google. Tyson’s name was drawn out of over 300 entries. That makes this contest one of the best ever. You guys must want a flash drive really bad!
For those who didn’t win, don’t feel too bad. There are still two more contests going on. The first is the TTZ Media affiliate contest for a 22″ LG LCD monitor. We’re giving away two of those. The deadline to enter that contest is the end of this year (that’s in two days). If you haven’t got your entry in, better get on it!
The second contest is for the Ruff PC laptop. I made it into the final round of voting. I came second in the last round. If I win this final round, I win the Ruff PC and that means one of you will win the Ruff PC! So [...]
