The New Portals

Posted under Search Engine Optimization

This is a really interesting observation:
“For the last several years, Yahoo, MSN and AOL have all suffered a declining share of pageviews, but that does not mean the portal is going out of style. Rather it has been redefined, first by Google, and now by Facebook in potentially even more profound ways.”
“Facebook has a […]

Improving Text Segmentation for Displaying Advertisements and Filtering Search Results

Posted under Search Engines and Directories

When you type a domain name into your browser address bar and the domain isn’t found, sometimes you’ll be served a search results page that has advertisements and links related to a “subject” for that domain name.
For example, you might type “usedrugs.com” into the address bar, and there may not be a website at the domain name “usedrugs.com”. You may be redirected to a third-party website, with advertisements and/or links relevant to that domain name. Ads might be shown for the phrase “used rugs” on that web page, if it is determined to be the most likely segmented version of the string of text from the domain name.
Some sites might be filtered from appearing in search results because the domain names may seem to potentially indicate adult related material.
For example, a domain name, such as “mikesexpress.com”, could be filtered out of search results by an adult filter, [...]

Noise Level

Posted under Uncategorized

SEL is great, but this list of options on the bottom of their RSS feed posts always makes me grin.
It’s so….exhaustive!

The only option that appears to be missing is “F**k This”….I guess “Fark It” is close enough, though.

Patience is a Virtue!….my dear friends

Posted under My SEO blog

How many times have we heard this?? And how many of us actually have patience in the first place?? lol… Anyways, patience is probably one of the most important things you need to have when promoting your website. You can be the best web designer around, have the greatest content and features on your site and SEO it like crazy, but when it’s all said and done, time is your best friend of all.

Patience when attempting to profit from the internet is necessary in many places. First, don’t expect your brand new website to start getting 10,000 visitors per day over-night. It takes time for search engines to list new websites and then even longer to rank them decently. Submitting to sites like Digg can help speed up the process, but there are really no shortcuts to getting Google to rank your new site highly. It also takes a while to get people to start chattering about your site, so that means you can forget about word-of-mouth advertising in the beginning. Links also take weeks, months and sometimes even years to build up, adding to the lack of early growth most websites endure. All this is definitely frustrating in the beginning.

Local SEO - Comparision of Abingdon Hotel Websites

Posted under Google, seo

I’ve been doing a few local searches recently to find some examples of well-optimised Abingdon websites, I found a Google search for “Abingdon hotels” brought up an excellent example of both good and bad SEO for various local accommodation websites. Just to make it clear I have nothing to do with any of these websites and I’m unsure if they have received any SEO advice, I just find local search engine optimization quite interesting so chose these sites to take a deeper look into how they’re ranking.
Here’s a quick look at how some of the basic SEO factors compare for the top four hotels in Abingdon:
Upper Reaches

Page Title: “The Upper Reaches Hotel - one of the finest hotels on the Thames”This certainly needs the keyword Abingdon in there somewhere.
On-Page SEO: Not sure about the breakline within the H2 tag, needs a bit of a tidy up to target the Abingdon [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Mahalo: Jason Calacanis Launches A Directory

Posted under Search Engine Optimization

Biggest non-secret in the search industry - Jason Calacanis launches a new human powered search service called Mahalo.
A directory, in other words.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I like directories. I run a few of my own. I’m not sure what I was expecting. Something new, perhaps.
What we’ve got is About.com crossed […]

Mahalo: Old Is New Again, But Bad Is Still Bad

Posted under Competitive Webmastering, Foo

So SEO Public Enemy #1 launched his future failure today: Mahalo. A cross between Wikipedia and DMOZ, except they have to pay their editors. Sweet! (Where is the sarcasm smiley?)
My question is: why bother spamming it, when it won’t gain enough users to send any real traffic?
Nevertheless, whoever writes the first ‘How to: Spam Maholo’ gets a link from this post, just trackback me.
Update: I think this IM exchange sums it up nicely:
Me: It’s seriously just About.com
AaronWall: But worse.

AndyHagans.com Hacked! Can You Help Me Out?

Posted under Foo

As I posted earlier I’m out of the client game, but I got bored this morning and checked the rankings of the old client services site (old habits die hard). I usually own the top spot for [link building] and what can I say it’s a matter of pride. Well today I was a bit perplexed that not only was AndyHagans.com not ranking #1 for [link building], it was nowhere to be found! However, the site wasn’t banned–an internal page was still ranking in the top 100 for [link building]. I figured that maybe I hit some sort of filter. I wasn’t going to lose any sleep over its rankings considering the site isn’t monetized at all.
Then later today I got an email from a friendly contact letting me know I had about a thousand animal sex-related links which were hidden below the footer on the AndyHagans.com homepage. (Apparently, [...]

Matt Cutts Mostly Links To Himself. And Google.

Very cool analysis. Matt keeps the link love in-house. And sleeps between 2.00am and 7am. Apparently.
More interesting analysis of top blogs, and linking structure, here.

Engadget is very big. Damn big, infact. I use too many infacts.

Google’s Green Border Technologies Patent Filings

Posted under Acquisitions

On May 11th, Google purchased security company Green Border Technologies, Inc.
Green Border has a handful of patent applications pending, and a granted patent for their security software. One of the names that appears on most of the documents is Ulfar Erlingsson, who left the company in 2003 to join Microsoft Research.
The software from the Mountain View, California based company works to isolate internet sessions from the rest of a user’s PC. I’ve seen speculation that this software might be offered to Google users as part of the free Google Pack software download. The software might also be used by the search engine to crawl sites using client software to locate malware.
Patent
Methods and systems for providing a secure application environment using derived user accounts
Invented by Ulfar Erlingsson
Assigned to Green Border Technologies
United States Patent 7,191,469
Granted March 13, 2007
Filed: June 14, 2002
Abstract
A secure application environment (”SAE”) may be [...]

You Are Better Than You Think

Posted under The Dream

This quote got me thinking:
Every entrepreneur feels vaguely disreputable. Maybe you drive a crappy car. Maybe you never went to prom. There are enough stuffed suits in this world to fill fifteen Wall Street Journals a day. As anyone who watches American Idol will tell you, what this spun-out, over-hyped world is absolutely famished for is a little genuine personality. And, outside of your technology, it’s probably the only thing you have. So stop trying to be like IBM and just be yourself.

Those words really rang true. When you are first starting out as a designer, webmaster, entrepreneur, blogger, or SEO, the “industry” can seem daunting. Why would anyone take you seriously when there are hundreds of better designers, better entrepreneurs, or better SEOs out there whose names have been around for five years and who have shiny websites, portfolios and published articles to back them up?
Let me put it [...] Read the rest of this entry »
